Nordic Circular Design Programme Showcased at EU-Korea Ecodesign Forum

The Nordic Circular Design Programme is receiving increasing international recognition as a prime example of how design can facilitate businesses' success in the green transition. Last week, the programme, which is funded by Nordic Innovation, was presented at the EU-Korea Ecodesign Cooperation Forum in Seoul as a successful model for preparing companies for the upcoming EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

The forum brought together high-level speakers from the EU and South Korea, including government officials, industry experts and policymakers. The programme was recognised as a practical initiative that supports businesses in navigating the evolving regulatory landscape while enhancing their competitiveness in local and global markets.

Key takeaways from the forum:

  • ESPR is moving forward. The EU is firmly advancing preparations for the ESPR, which will introduce mandatory sustainability requirements for almost all products sold in the EU. This marks a significant shift from voluntary to binding sustainability standards.

  • Implementation will be swift. The European Commission's first working plan, due to be published in April 2025, suggests a rapid rollout for the initial product groups. Businesses must be prepared to respond quickly.

  • There are opportunities for global input: Delegated acts under the European Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) are open to feedback from not only EU stakeholders, but also key trade partners such as South Korea. This emphasises the importance of international cooperation in developing sustainable product policies.

  • Global momentum for circular design: Ecodesign and Digital Product Passport (DPP) initiatives are gaining traction beyond Europe. Similar frameworks are being developed in other markets, signalling a clear strategic direction for businesses globally: circularity is the future.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the EU-Korea Green Partnership Programme, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and the EU Delegation to the Republic of Korea for organising this timely and informative forum. It was a privilege to contribute to the event and connect with so many engaged and forward-thinking participants.

As international interest in the Nordic Circular Design Programme continues to grow, we remain committed to equipping businesses across the Nordic region — and beyond — with the tools, insights and networks they need to lead the way in circular innovation.
